Whitchurch
This new build house had the usual sort of look to its garden – a blank canvas. Our clients were keen to capitalise on the evening summer sun and incorporate a small patio area. There was also a bunny to be catered for and if a larger area for him to run in could be created with out him being able to get access to the house all the better. Planting was based on a profusion of colour and growth all summer long.
In line with building regulations, a structually strong retaining wall, 60cm’s wide at the base, tapering up to a single brick width at the top. This splitting in levels also created a natural pen in the lower part of the garden – Just pop a divivde in to block off the steps and Percy (The Bunny rabbit) has a large safe enclosed run to himself – whats more he can’t burrow out as the turf was laid on a web matting.
Drainage was needed on the lower level this was to be the play area for the childrens Swings etc as much as the Bunnies extended run. For this a Herring bone soakaway was installed. Below you can see that a nuisance manhole was disguised with a chameleon drain in the flower bed. and the drain next to the wheel barrow was raised to be level with the patio and the fall of the patio was also directed towards the drain so as to save any excess water falling to the lower section of the garden.
The Clients were also keen surfers so Wave patterns were incorporated between the flower beds / Lawn / Patio to give it something a little more personal – cue photos from the first floor of people ‘surfing the waves’ whilst lying down in the garden!
