Barry College

The College’s disabled and learning centre was in much need of some help and restoration, with its gravel paths and general overgrown nature. Its layout and features did not lend itself to the learning centre. This was an epic overhaul which stretched over six weeks.

The Original gardens were over grown, dated and crucially had gravel paths which were quite inadequate for wheelchairs. Following on from a detailed brief, designs were submitted which included a water feature, Pergola, Patio pathways and raised beds to give the best user experience possible.

Firstly though, was to be the romvoal of all the undergrowth, including the removal of ivy enveloping a hawthorn tree and a cherry tree. The ever green clematis which had collapsed of the far wall opposite was also to go, in the end the foliage alone filled the hold of a 16 ton trailer.

Raised beds, built to concise widths to allow easy wheelchair user access were to be extended across the garden to allow plenty of growing space and reduce costly maintained lawn areas which were never used. Reclaimed railway sleepers were used so existing ones could be recycled, but a further 60 were still going to be needed, and in turn they would need nearly 20 tons of top soil to fill them.

Our brief was also to rejuvenate what buildings etc where on site, including a dilapidated Poly tunnel, Wooden framed greenhouse and a shed and summerhouse.

After 6 long weeks the gardens and surrounding buildings had been transformed into a worakable outdoor classroom. the summer house, sheds and greenhouse had been cleaned down, repaired and repainted, the polytunnel resheeted and cleared out inside with more raised beds and potting bays.

A pergola adds height and a water feature just beyond the bench created both sounds and sensroy needs.

There is space on all paths for wheelchairs to pass and the height of the raised beds varies so all users can actively become involved. We look forward to our next project with Cardiff and Vale Colleges soon.
